7 Travel Planning Mistakes to Avoid This Summer
Summer travel season is here—and whether you're flying to Europe, booking a cruise, or finally checking that dream resort off your list, one thing is true: a little planning goes a long way.
I’ve seen too many trips turn chaotic (or just unnecessarily stressful) thanks to a few common missteps that are totally avoidable. So before you book those flights or pack your bags, here are 7 travel planning mistakes to skip if you want your summer getaway to be smooth, relaxing, and exactly what you envisioned.
1. Waiting Too Long to Book
Last-minute deals are rare during peak season. Prices climb fast, and availability gets tight—especially around holiday weekends. Book early to lock in the best options without the stress.
2. Overstuffing the Itinerary
You don’t need to do it all. Packing every minute of your trip leaves no room for rest, spontaneity, or surprise gems you’ll stumble across. Prioritize a few key experiences, then give yourself time to breathe.
3. Ignoring Your Passport Expiration Date
It’s easy to overlook, but many countries require your passport to be valid for at least 3–6 months beyond your return date. Always check before you book—trust me on this. In addition, empty pages on your passport.
4. Skipping Travel Insurance
Delays, cancellations, and lost luggage are way too common in summer. A solid travel insurance plan can save your trip and your wallet if something goes sideways. We have a whole blog on travel insurance you can check out here.
5. Not Double-Checking Layovers or Time Zones
That 45-minute layover might look convenient—but in real life, it’s a recipe for missed connections. Always check flight logistics carefully and give yourself buffer time, especially for international travel. Give yourself a minimum of 1 HR layover (even then I would highly recommend 2 hrs.)
6. Forgetting to Book Dining or Activities in Advance
Top restaurants, spas, and tours fill up quickly—especially in summer hotspots. If there’s something you’re really excited about, reserve it in advance so you’re not scrambling (or missing out) once you arrive.
7. Trying to DIY Everything
If you’re short on time, energy, or patience, don’t force it. Planning a trip can be overwhelming—and that’s exactly where a travel advisor (hey, that’s me 👋🏽) comes in. I take care of the logistics so you can focus on showing up and soaking it all in.
